Reduce Oversized Lips for a More Masculine Appearance with Lip Reduction for Men.
While full, luscious lips are often associated with beauty, they’re not necessarily known for being a masculine trait per se. Many men may feel self-conscious about their lips being too full or disproportionate to the rest of their facial features. If these feelings affect your quality of life, then it may be time to consider a lip reduction for men surgical procedure. Dr. Elizabeth Whitaker of Atlanta Face & Body is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon who has helped many men improve their confidence by reconstructing their lips for a more pleasing appearance.
Am I a candidate for lip reduction surgery for men?
If you’re a man with concerns about the size and girth of your lips or you’re self-conscious about your smile because of your lips, then lip reduction surgery may be a good option for you. Ideal candidates are men in generally good health who do not smoke and who have realistic expectations about the procedure. Dr. Elizabeth and her staff will discuss the surgery in detail and answer any questions you may have to help you determine if lip reduction surgery is right for you
Before & After: Lip Reduction for Men
How is lip reduction for men performed?
Lip reduction involves the strategic removal of excess tissue from the lips along the vermilion (the red part of your lips) to create a thinner, more pleasing appearance. Dr. Elizabeth tailors incisions to the individual patient and the degree of reduction they desire. Lip reduction for men is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia. It can be performed on the upper or lower lips or both, depending on your personal goals. After excess tissue is carefully removed, Dr. Elizabeth will then suture the incisions with stitches that typically dissolve in about 7 to 10 days. Any scars will be on the inside of your lips and generally undetectable by others.
What is the recovery from lip reduction surgery like?
Temporary swelling and mild discomfort are common immediately following lip reduction surgery, but these typically diminish within a few days and can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication. We recommend you spend the day of and after surgery resting with as little talking as possible. Wait at least 24 hours post-surgery before resuming your normal activities. Also, you should refrain from exercise for 7 to 14 days and eat only soft foods that do not require much chewing. Try to minimize any unnecessary contact with the lips during the healing process if possible. Most patients heal fairly quickly and require minimal downtime, but ever situation is different depending on the extent of tissue removal and the individual patient. Dr. Elizabeth and her staff will go over all details of post-surgery care and what you can expect as far as recovery at your private consultation.
Are there any risks involved with lip reduction surgery?
While generally considered a safe procedure, lip reduction for men comes with some risks (as do most all surgical procedures). These risks may include:
- Reaction to the local anesthetic
- Sensation changes or numbness in the lips
- Hematoma or seroma
- Functional problems, such as improper closure of the lips or changes in expression
The good news is that risks like these are highly minimized when lip reduction surgery is performed by an experienced, reputable facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Elizabeth.
What results can I expect from lip reduction surgery?
Once swelling subsides, you’ll notice your lips appearing smaller and more balanced in proportion to the rest of your facial features. It generally takes about 2 to 4 weeks for initial results and up to 2 to 4 months for optimal results to present, which are most often permanent.
